    This view was taken to the left of one of the small gate houses that stood at the entrance to the long winding drive up to Mendip Lodge. The dark conifer on the left is a majestic Wellingtonia (Sequioadendron giganticum) native to the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It is still there, as proof that here had been an estate that was worthy of such a grand herald.
