Clifford Skillman and Reginald Lyons were both presented with certificates for bravery for rescuing Mary Ann Filer from a serious house fire which largely destroyed her house. Mrs Filer had money hidden all over the house & was reluctant to leave the blazing building. Paper money and Treasury notes were destroyed but some coins were salvaged. Clifford and Reg were also presented with cheques for £2-2s – small compensation for Reg who injured his arm & was off work without pay for some time afterwards. The house was subsequently rebuilt and is now known as Sovereign cottage.
