The plaque presented to the village by Meredith Butterton on behalf of the 126th Ordnance Company who were stationed in Blagdon in 1944. Three return visits to the village were made by Meredith Butterton, the last being in 1984. The Parish council held a reception and in turn Andrew Addicott presented the visitors with a plaque recording the village’s appreciation of the friendship of the company. The above plaque is on display in the Village Club. Meredith Butterton wrote a book about his wartime experience ‘Metric 16’ (the code name for the company).

Wish I had been there for that presentation party. My Dad was in the home guard in Blagdon and told me that only one German plane came down on Blackdown and the pilot was captured and arrested by the guys in the Home Guard, including my Dad.
